The abolitionist movement sought to end slavery and also end the African and indigenous slave trade. The election of Abraham Lincoln, an anti-slavery Republican, resulted in the secession of 7 southern states from the Union and the formation of the Confederate States of America. The United States began to expand from the Louisiana Purchase and then with the Mexican-American War. New states are beginning to form and this has raised the question of what the new states should be, free or slave. In Chicago in 1859, Abraham Lincoln gave a speech in which he declared, "I believe that slavery is wrong, morally and politically." Lincoln does not condone racism and is not an abolitionist, he just wants equal rights. Lincoln gives another speech to the audience, declaring that the United States cannot "promote human slavery while proclaiming us the only friends of human liberty." Lincoln cannot imagine Americans encouraging the development of slavery and saying that we all get along. The North was an industrialized economy, while the South was agricultural.
