In general, Marvel has been pretty good with quality control. There are no absolute catastrophesCanon of the UCM, and even small disappointments likeEternalmiThor: The Dark WorldIt has its champions. Unfortunately, there are many titles that fall into the dark middle: they work, but they're not exactly great.
However, there have been times in Marvel's long history when the studio has managed to make films that feel like more than just the latest film in a long line of Montage products. These are the films that achieve the high level of excellence that audiences have come to expect from Marvel and rise to the top of the MCU.

Maybe not an obvious choice for the top spot, butGuardian Vol. Twohas all the things that the first didGuardiangreat, but it seems Gunn is even less self-conscious in this sequel. Colors are brighter, jokes are bigger, and everything feels more perfectly calibrated. Introduce Kurt Russell as a father figure and eventually as a big bad and you have the perfect recipe for a great Marvel movie.Guardian Vol. TwoIt's a great moment, but it also features some of the best character arcs in the entire MCU, from Rocket's realization that he needs his friends to Yondu's admission that he was Peter's father, whether he wanted the job or not.

Yes, that's a controversial decision, but listen to us. One of the most idiosyncratic films in the MCU,iron man 3It's also about as far as any Marvel film to suggest there are some psychological consequences of being an Avenger. The film's played villain is certainly debatable, but part of the fun of the film is that it's not really about the villains. This is a film about Tony Stark's struggle to be the hero he wants to be and his inability to see a way forward for himself. Significantly, this was the last Iron Man film; Wheniron man 3ended, Tony's arc as a solo character was essentially complete.

Ant Man and the WaspIt might be Marvel's least important film, and that's part of what makes it great. The film carries the crazy energy that definedant manand takes it to a new level while making Evangeline Lilly's Hope the co-leader. The action here is crisp and clean, and the film's climax feels genuinely unique, partly because the stakes are relatively low.Ant Man and the WaspIt might be the funniest Marvel movie, and it certainly is the dumbest, and that makes it endlessly rewatchable.

Infinite WarIt should have been an impossible movie. It has about a billion named characters, and many of them have been leads in their own films or franchises. Not only does the film work, it's actually quite good, and that's partly because it makes the somewhat radical decision to put Thanos at the center. We spend a lot of time with Iron Man and Thor (which is really cool here), but the movie is really about Thanos' quest and his ultimate success. It's a crazy structure, but one that allows for a really disappointing ending that sets up its sequel perfectly.

FirstCaptain AmericaThe movie is so good because it's actually a war movie with superhero trappings. Almost all of the film is contained in this installment, and the central love story between Steve and Peggy was so compelling that it ended their entire arc almost a decade later. Steve Rogers has remained one of the great MCU characters throughout.the end of the game, but never better than in this first part, where he's more useful as a symbol than as a soldier.

James Gunn's presence in the MCU was a godsend in 2014, when Marvel films looked like they were created from a single template. FirstGuardianThe film is a well-rounded comedy, but it's also one of the MCU's most stylish entries and one that really shows how offbeat its characters are. The Guardians were a really deep group of Marvel characters, but Gunn's work in making them feel compelling made them feel absolutely essential to the MCU's broader tone going forward.

Another movie that seemed almost impossible and works better than it should,Avengers Endgameit's exactly what everyone wanted. The really melancholy and pessimistic first hour builds beautifully into the time stealer and finally the final battle that occupies the final act. It's a film that everyone involved knew they couldn't screw up, and they didn't. Cap finally manages to say "Avengersassemble" and then people go nuts for about 30 minutes.Avengers EndgameIt's funny, moving and above all a triumph.

The movie that started the MCU is still one of the best. As Marvel evolved, it felt less and less anchored in the real world and more inIronman, we have a superhero who has his feet firmly planted in reality. The film's patience, especially when Tony is locked up in the desert, deserves plenty of praise, as does Robert Downey Jr's incredibly charismatic performance. Tony Stark was to define his entire career, and it's easy to see why. InsideIronman, sets the MCU's sarcastic tone but amplifies it with a genuine sense of humanity that he would maintain throughout his tenure at Marvel.

An obvious choice, but the best, and who can deny the excellence of this film? Expectations were high forBlack Panther, but Ryan Coogler caught up with them and passed them. This film has essentially no connection to the larger MCU, but the story it tells is so compelling and the world of Wakanda it presents so fully realized that those connections would seem superfluous anyway. The action in this film may not be cutting edge, but this remains the only Marvel film to earn a Best Picture nomination for a reason. He's got things on his mind, and he's also got half a dozen great performances to back them up.
