How to play the Bm chord

The Bm chord, also spelled B minor, confuses many of my students. The hardest part of the Bm chord is making the "beam" on the fretboard.

But Tony, what the hell is a bar??”

A stem is where you pluck different strings on your guitar with your index finger. Think of your first finger as a capo - it will cross all the strings while you use the other fingers to form the rest of the chord.

(If the image above is confusing, check out my lessonhow to read chord charts. I promise it makes chord diagrams more meaningful!)

So, if we look at the Bm chord, you'll find that it requires all your fingers to curl.

How to play Bm on guitar

  1. First, run your index finger across the A, D, G, B and E strings. Don't worry about the low E string - it will mute you for the Bm chord.
  2. Place your middle finger on the third fret of the B string.
  3. Then place your ring finger on the fourth fret of the D string.
  4. Finally, play the fourth fret of the G string with your pinky.

When your fingers are in the correct position, play the Bm chord. If it sounds muddy, watch for some muffled notes, make sure your fingers have a good bow.

If you have a bow in your fingers (i.e. making sure your knuckles are bent), you can play with your fingertips. When you play with your fingertips, you're less likely to accidentally muffle another string.

Also, make sure your fingers are directly behind the fret, not on top or in the middle of two frets.

Playing this chord requires a lot of finger strength. As you learn this chord, you can take breaks as needed.

Remember, learning to play the guitar is a journey, not a race. Take your time to get used to the chords and don't hurt yourself trying to learn the chord in one day!

Many beginning guitarists forget to control tension while playing. Try to relax as much as possible, and if you need more advice, check out mystress management lesson.

Bm Chord Exercise [Memorize it!]

Before I show you alternative fingerings for the Bm chord, I want you to try this super simple exercise called the Quick Draw exercise.

B minor is a difficult chord to understand and even harder to remember. Therefore, the quick drawing exercise is very useful.

To get started with the quick drawing exercise, you'll need your guitar and preferably a stopwatch or watch (I always use the one on my phone).

  1. Start with your restless hand on your thigh.
  2. Be sure to watch the second hand on the watch or run a stopwatch.
  3. Within five seconds, you form the Bm chord with your holding hand.
  4. Be sure to play the chord as soon as your five seconds are up!

You don't have to do the quick drawing exercise every five seconds. Instead, take a break and wait a few seconds before doing the quick drawing exercise again.

This exercise is great for developing muscle memory and the memory needed to play a chord.

How to Play the Bm Chord Without Restrictions

Okay, I know I said there's no trick to playing the Bm chord, but that might be it!

If you're having trouble with the barre aspect of the Bm chord, you can play the chord without barring the strings.

Bm Chord for Beginners [Exercises and EASY Versions] (2)

As you can see from the chord diagram, this version of the Bm chord already looks easier because you don't have to play five strings with your index finger!

  1. Start by placing your index finger on the second fret of the high E string.
  2. Place your middle finger on the third fret of the B string.
  3. Your ring finger plays the fourth fret on the D string.
  4. Finally, play the fourth fret of the G string with your pinky.

This Bm chord is perfect if you are having trouble playing the second fret.

this version is notTRUEBm chord (has the second degree of the scale), works if you don't know how to play the frets.

Many students still find this version of the Bm chord too difficult. Fortunately, there's another way to play it.

The simplest Bm chord [Bm7]

I'm cheating on this one because technically it's not a true Bm chord. Instead, the simplest Bm chord is a Bm variation: Bm7.

I won't go into detail about this chord, but you'll see that it has a different tonal quality than the first Bm chord I showed you. That's because in this chord you will be adding the 7th degree of the scale.

Bm Chord for Beginners [Exercises and EASY Versions] (3)

To play this variation of the Bm chord you only need to use three fingers.

  1. Place your index finger on the second fret of the A string.
  2. Leave the D string open.
  3. Press the second fret of the G string with your middle finger.
  4. Leave the B string open.
  5. Finally, place your ring finger on the second fret of the high E string.

When strumming this version of the Bm chord, be sure to...

  • Hold the bow in your fingers.
  • Play with your fingertips.

This Bm7 will sound different from the other chords I've shown you precisely because it has minor seventh chords in the chord.

You can replace this chord with a regular Bm chord, but be aware that this may change the tonal quality of the song you are trying to play.

Which version should you learn?

I will be open and honest with you:You must learn the Bm chord with the barre on the second fret.

I know it's a challenging chord, but I believe in you. I'm not going to tell you that the Bm chord is "simply beyond the capabilities of most beginning guitarists".

Practice the Bm chord in small chunks

The reality is that playing the Bm chordpractice. Playing the guitar usually takes practice. It may not arrive in a day, a week or a few weeks, and that's okay. I'd rather see you work on the Bm chord for 10 minutes every day than strain your hand trying to perfect it in an hour.

I'm serious about this 10 minutes a day thing (if you want to know why 10 minutes a day is so important, check out myimportant tips for practicing guitar).

Even if you only want to practice the Bm chord for three minutes (which can seem like a long time, believe me), use the other seven minutes to play some easier chords or a simple song!

I don't want you to feel bad because you can't play the Bm chordimmediately. Instead, practice constantly and use the quick drawing exercise to remind yourself.

Who knows, maybe after a few weeks of daily practice you'll be playing the Bm chord little by little like it's nobody's business!
